We want to be Your Source!
Please take a moment to think about how you would finish this sentence:
"Spokane Public Radio is my source for..."
Tell us your story. We're interested in hearing how KPBX and KSFC have made a difference in your life. Share a listening experience or tell us why you rely on us as "my source."
Objective news and commentary, alternative viewpoints on current affairs, and the world's finest music. The radio reader is also often an introduction to literature we've not encountered or classics we enjoy hearing again. Spokane's location, centered in our absolute favorite countryside, and the people it attracts, make KPBX our cherished friend. Our choice to not support satelite TV,(our only possible source) because there currently is no way to only receive PBS, makes KPBX or primary link to the world outside the thankfully isolated Methow Valley.
News, information, late Sunday night music, Car Talk, Selected Shorts, etc. I'm so glad you're on the Internet as I can listen no matter where we travel and stay in touch with "home." Wish there was "quiet time" music around 10-11 p.m. every night. Thanks for being here.
most of my news...I drive long distances to and from Whitworth, and I nearly always listen to Spokane Public Radio, the main source of my news, variety of music, Dr. Zorba P, and what ever else, over TV, or the internet. Sometimes I listen to a cD in the car, but for these daily trips, it's Spokane Public Radio that is my number 1 choice! Thanks for enriching my life like you do!
Reliable, in depth news and great music, although I miss Thistle & Shamrock and I still mourn the loss of Bob Edwards. Steve Jackson is the "other man" I wake up with and his friendly voice is always a pleasure. SPR has the best local programming including Saturday Cafe, Soundspace and Front Porch Bluegrass.
DOWN HOME BLUES- I wouldn't spend a saturday night without it! But WHEN is it going to be extended? One hour of Brian's great choices is just not enough!
intelligent, personal, nuanced stories and voices that I don't find online or in the newspaper or on tv news. Morning Edition gives depth to my understanding of national and international news. thanks!
News. There is more news content within the NPR news and All things considered than I can get anywhere with the possible exception of dedicated news channels. Often I often hear important news items covered on NPR or All Things Considered that I don't hear from the other sources. Keep up the good work. It is important to cover as much of the news as possible, not just the stuff that may increase viewers or listeners.
Jazz! The Friday afternoon block of 3 hrs. is outstanding, always. Today's show was another great selection of classic jazz. I have listened to another weekly show on CBC radio and it does not hold a candle to yours. Kudos to the producer!! B. Grant
News, information, varied music. Connection to the outside world beyond, where as I would have been isolated if I relied on local media and national tv .... And bravo Free Kid's Concerts that you and others in the business community support. I write to thank you for a beautiful songs of the Civil War program yesterday, We learned much and truly enjoyed. thank you.
classical music, garrison keillor and other comedy shows, the doctor show, alternative speeches and most importantly, morning edition and all things considered. I want to say as a member over here in the Methow Valley, where we don't have access to responsibly reported national and international news, that i was very disappointed in your coverage of the national political conventions, especially the major speeches. With national elections coming around only once in 4 years, it is imperative that rural areas have access to live coverage of events so important to our lives. Please plan your coverage 4 years hence to assure that you give us lots more convention coverage. i'm looking forward to excellent political coverage during the upcoming presidential and congressional elections. --Nigel Cushing
all news, since local and national television news has become more like Entertainment Tonight instead of actual news that I care about. I have lived in Spokane for 8 years now, and to be honest, it is not on my short list of favorite places, but I LOVE this radio station. I wake up to it every morning and pretty much spend my entire Saturday with it. I have it on in every room of my house while I do my "chores", in my car & bring it outside for yard work.
Enlightenment and entertainment, especially on my commute to and from work. Morning Edition, Marketplace and All Things Considered keep me well informed on issues and provide interesting features that I would not have access to anywhere else. I also love the classical, jazz, and blues music programs, PHC, Wait Wait, and many more. I tune in as often as I can. Thanks so much!
RADIO THAT MOVES ME. I'm listening to Brion Foster's DOWN HOME BLUES that i recorded last saturday night on my satellite box and as always he will never let me down. Right now i don't know who i'm hearing but i am so happy to be here now. right here. AMAZING we lovekpbx BILL AND JANE Revelstoke B.C.
this and that
Everything but the Cougars and the Mariners!
balanced, unbiased local and national news and information. I awake to SPR every morning and it never fails to bring rationality and clarity to the sometimes irrational events that occur worldwide on a daily basis. It also allows me to laugh at those quirky things that happen when I tune to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and "Car Talk". Without laughter life would be much grayer and dreary. Thank you SPR for making my life fuller and richer. Gil Beyer
intelligent and inspiring news and information.
ecclectic music, literature and balanced, complete news. Since I found KPBX on my radio in 1980, I have been inspired, enriched and brought to tears of joy, anger and hysterical laughter. Public broadcasting is one of the last bastions of sanity in a nation dumbed-down and polarized by the corporate kleptocracy.
Local events, music, culture and down home good programming. I love listening to my favorite programs: Garrison Keillor, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, news, new age music, easy listening, As It Happens, Zorba Pasteur. All of it is interesting. Some books are a "must read", well, Spokane Public Radio is a "must listen". Thanks for being there.
news and entertainment -- when I want it -- where I want it 24/7.
Spokane Public Radio is my source for information about area arts and music events. Even if one disregards the Arts Calendar, which is in itself a fantastic resource, the rest of the "station awareness" is very evident with interviews, special program segments, etc. SPR really is a Base Camp to where all of us can come for information, comfort, and friendship.
...........music, entertainment, news when I am at home before 9:00 A.M., during the day when we have the chance to be home and whenever we are in our automobile. We thank you for being there for us. We do have one concern. In the mornings during the week, at 9:00 A.M. the signal becomes distorted and very hard to listen to. We value the music chosen by Vern Windham, but it is too scratchy for us to stay with. We will continue to support you, and we do give what we are able to support the best radio available to us. Thank you, Jean & Richard Kohles Hayden, Idaho
First, there are no other places in this area where I can listen to Tom Bacon, my favorite announcer. His knowledge, wit, and approach are unique and precious. Secondly, KPBX is one of the only real news sources in this town, the other being public TV. I like the morning and afternoon news, the specials, and of course the music. So, when it comes to "my source", I must admit that KPBX is in the number one spot! Finally, I am pleased to continue my monthly donation to KPBX via my Wells Fargo Bill Pay automatic payment plan. It is quick, easy, and a no-brainer. Regards, Bob
life perspectives, liberty from opinionated and unbalanced reporting and the pursuit of happiness/trajedy in the lives of people with whom I share the planet and my neighborhood. By choice I have no TV. KPBX I believe provides for me a clearer and more intelligent "HD" picture of our world than any image on any 54+ inch screen. Size really doesn't matter when your ears and your heart become your eyes.
I am self-employed. I also take a hike each day for several miles. I carry a portable radio with an ear piece with me most of the time. I only plug an ear bud into one ear, not both. the radio is set on NPR down low, too, so I can simply pick up something interesting, like On Point's visit to China, or the latest news. The options, over time, seem endless. And endlessly fascinating. As often as not, I not only perk up, I turn up the volume slightly so I can concentrate on an entire show. It goes on like that all day long, nearly every day, and intensifies on Saturday's with shows like "Car Talk" and "Wait, Wait" as well as "On The Media." But perhaps most importantly, at the end of my work or break day, I feel intellectually refreshed, a little more aware of the world around me, and greatly satisfied and stimulated by the general feeling that I not only accomplished something at work, but learned something stimulating in the process. Finally, I don't know who chooses the music between shows, but there is an artist in there somewhere. He/she is worthy of an On point report one day, I believe. I'd like to know his/her name and NPR to thank him/her for the mastery that goes into it. See if you can get Tom Ashbrook to add it to his eclectic reports one fine day by featuring this person. It would be a fine piece added to a wonderful puzzle I very much enjoy in the NPR puzzle. thanks for being there and for all you do to enrich my life, Jerry McGinn
news and information for making neighborhoods and communities better places to live and work. Programs like Smart City, Living on Earth and It's Your World give me a look at how other communities have solved social and environmental problems for the greater harmony and well-being of their citizens. This gives me a vision for improving my neighborhood and city. Just this past Sunday I heard a fascinating piece on Weekend Edition Sunday about UNESCO and Proctor & Gamble turning a slum in Cairo into a laboratory for recycling. This not only enriches the slum dwellers' lives, but is a model that we all can learn from.
The best classical music program in the country. Many friends from out-of-town have told me this. Verne Windham’s knowledge of and love for music is contagious. His programming flexibility, which enables him to react to local, national, and even international events with appropriate music and commentary, is extraordinary.
As a constant companion while driving anywhere KPBX helps keep my sanity by providing excellent interviews with both points of view, up to date news reporting, and tremendous in depth reporting on a variety of subjects. Through those reports I feel informed, educated, entertained, and quite well rounded. As described by one station "I feel a part of a community." This is a public service that our community would be "less than" without. Pam Madison
Soundbites (and sometimes bigger bites) of the election broohaha...........which is all I really want to know. And for "ear candy" music!!
In depth information, entertainment, and thought provoking insights. I've been a listener for 27 years.
Accuracy! The news tells the truth, pronounces words and names correctly, and avoids gossup. I Fell connected to the inland northwest. One thing that hurts your accuracy rating, is when the time is announced fallowed by (exactly). Time is a measurement. Measurements are approximent. This American life, From The Top, and your sunday line-up are fantasic.
Compared to the inane mindless chatter on other 'talk' radio, NPR (SPR) is a cerebral Eden. If they would only avoid some tendency to pander to our illiterate youth and their music devoid of melody, harmony and sounds pleasant to the ear - as some would define music - and childish euphemisms as "Get Lit", which many of us remember, from times of youthful indiscretion, as Get Drunk! So, keep up the good work, but avoid that slippery slope to the mundane and foolish...;)
I just want to tell Verne and the whole crew that 91.1 saved my life when I moved back here after 38 wonderful years in Seattle. We arrived in 2004, and so much had changed from when I was growing up on a wheat ranch in the late 1950s and 60s. I found Spokane AM radio to be mean-spirited...a store owner, who happens to be the daughter of Spokane Symphony's pianist) told me about KPBX, and I found my radio station! Whew! Thanks for the great programming.
Above and beyond the veritable cornucopia of local and national offerings like the erudite whimsey of weekday morning Classical music, From the Top, Wait Wait, PHC, the all encompassing folk programs, Selected Shorts, Harmonia, Vox Humana!, Chamber Music, Chicago Symphony, World of Opera, Guitar Hour, and all the other special things you all do to keep us engaged and informed... Today, in particular you were my source for "Jokes for Opera Nerds". When Jim Tevenan asked us to imagine warm days in the midst of our latest snow storm, he suggested we take an imaginary cruise and wryly mentioned that whatever imaginary cruise we decided to take, he hoped it would not be on this particular ship. He then proceeded to play the overture to the Flying Dutchman. Thanks for the belly laugh! Come to think of it, I'd better up my pledge amount soon!
a daily dose of liberal bias. (NPR)
Entertainment and News; originally 21 years ago it was just for entertainment but I enjoy SO MUCH that is offered now. I seldom read the newspaper and/or watch t.v. news; love morning/weekend edition(s), take the quiz along with the folks on Wait Wait, BIG fan of Dan Maher and Inland Folk; short stories on Sundays is awesome. KPBX kids concerts, Writer's Almanac just before Vern launches into his 9 am show. I can always do other things while listening too; getting ready for work in the morning, yard work, cleaning out the garage, make a soup or just an "excuse" to lay down and relax with my feet up while I'm listening. I appreciate KPBX all the folks there.
KPBX is my source for information and inspiration. Thank you.
news. I was in the 'news' business in the 70s, and the tide was beginning to turn even then; news stories driven by advertising dollars. NPR gives me the news as objectively as I believe it can be delivered. What initially attracted me was the sound effects, and that time didn't seem to be a constraint. I've always loved radio for the creativity it allows; many stories begin with the sound of whatever it is the correspondent is reporting, which adds a dimension you just don't get anywhere else.
I've been listening to KPBX since the late 70's when we moved to the outbacks in Idaho. We had no TV and computers weren't born yet. We listened to KPBX religiously for news as well as entertainment (Prairie Home Companion comes to mind). Since then, we have moved back to the "city" with all the amenities the digital age can offer. Yet, not a day passes that KPBX isn't tuned in-home, car, office. I recently made a trip to Wash. DC and was delighted to get a tour of NPR and studio 4A! Chatting with Scott Simon and Juan Williams was a treat as well. Thank you KPBX -you're a vital community assett.
intelligent listening
Jazz, especially Jazz with Chaz on Friday nights
a worldly connection. Thanks for the music, news, culture, art and alternative programs. Your station is a breath of fresh air.
accurate, thoughtful reportage and discussion of current affairs, breaking news, and intelligent, frequently amusing, programming. KPBX begins my every day. I consider Spokane Public Radio a part of my on-going education: I am able to expand my horizons while paying proper homage to the household gods.
KPBX is my "mental multi-vitamin." KPBX feeds my mind like vitamins feed my body. KPBX keeps me in touch with the world. Because of my schedule, I don't have time on a daily basis to sit down and watch TV news or read the newspaper. Every morning I listen to KPBX while getting ready for work and driving to work. On the way home, I listen again. KPBX keeps me informed about the top news stories and as well as interesting reports on important issues. It keeps me mentally healthy. For that I thank you!
...news, music and learning about my new surroundings. We moved here recently and are in the process of building a house. Most of our household goods are in storage. That includes most of my cd's and records. We have no television in our present living arrangement. Spokane Public Radio provides interesting programming most hours of most days. I enjoy things like "Morning Concert" and "This American Life" but mostly I leave the radio on while I'm working and therefore I learn about the community, the various kinds of music and theatrical events available here and the interesting local political discussions in the news. I am really enjoying "Inland Folk" and the celtic music programs. I truly think I could not have found a better introduction to the Inland Northwest anywhere. I even know that this is the "Inland Northwest " because of SPR. I hear about weather (usually winter storm weather) in communities surrounding Spokane. I had fun recently when I drove through some of those towns on my way back from Canada and I was able to identify them because of SPR. Thanks.
I listen to KSFC exclusivly. It's getting really irritating when you run the same program 4 or five times in a week. Week day middle, Saturday Morn, Sunday night for example. Mastly the News Magazine shows. I know you have to get your moneys worth but giving me the same 'Smart City' four times is a bit much. Same with WRN announcements. Except that they run onto the dozens. The shabby best of Bucharest and the umpteenth repeat of Sean Street on 'Inside Radio'. ARGH! I know you don't control WRN but please pass this on. Program announcements ought to be changed at least once a year. ???????
new and interesting books to read. I've never been disappointed.
all my radio listening. If Spokane Public Radio disappeared tomorrow, I would not need a radio. It is the only radio station I listen to. When I have become bored with too much classical music, I have tried to turn to another station, but it is not enjoyable for me. So, I would rather listen to too much classical music, than listen to any other station. I am so very grateful for public radio. I got hooked on public radio when I moved into a new house and was cleaning, painting, etc. for many days. It was during a pledge drive, but I got hooked anyway. That was in 1999 and I became a member during that pledge drive.
News in the morning as I stretch and work out to get this geezer body moving; culture quickie from the Writer's Almanac; music here, there and everywhere; humility fix from the talented youngsters on Saturday noon's "From the Top"; therapeudic chuckles from "A Prairie Home Companion". KPBX enhances my life thrughout the day. Thanks! Sue Hille
Up to date news, a variety of music, and great entertainment! I have SPR on all the time. I work an evening shift so my cats and dog listen even when I'm not home. I rarely watch television as your programing keeps me up to date and I can work around the house and listen at the same time. As a supporting member I would like to say Great Job and keep up the good work! Thank You.
news and entertainment. I enjoy the eclectic mix that is offered daily, and even more so on the weekends. Thanks KPBX!
News, information and music. For all the above there is no finer source available. Because the news is to the point, it focuses on the story and not the sound bite.. the music matters because it reflects the local scene, allowing me to hear things I missed at the concerts, and on a national level it brings orchestras or performers one never gets to hear from this vantage. In all ways Spokane Public Radio reaches for and brings in the audience. It also helps that the staff is right on top of where they have to be. It is a pleasure to hear their voices and know they are so caring for the community in which they also live. Thanks for being here for me on a daily basis.
Spokane public radio is my source for news that matters. As a business professor, I am always on alert for news events and analysis that give relevance to my lessons. My students thank you!
I love both stations and have one or the other turned on all day. First the wonderful news from Morning Addition and then either Vern's classics or the discussion shows in the morning. I like to hear Native American calling, even though I am not native American. Later to All Things Considered or to hear a story read or the ladies from Canada. On the weekends my husband wouldn't miss Car Talk. The boys always put him in a good mood. All the other shows on both stations are great, with much variety. It makes cleaning the house easier. In fact, before I moved to Spokane, I had to find out what the local NPR situation was or I wouldn't have come here. I kid you not. At my last location in the mountains, you could not pick up NPR with clarity--a few tantalizing minutes and then static. To my joy and surprise, there were not one but two stations to pick from here. Finally, I want to say that I particularily appreciate your high quality local programming. By the way, Vern Windham is particularily charming. I only tune in to KPBX and KFSC. That's it in both the house and the car. Thanks and good luck. Patti Barber, 25 year NPR subscriber Thanks and kudos
"culture", living in the outback, kpbx and ksfc are a beacon to civilization. being a news junkie is a thankless task but, thank god, there is music, humor and insight to boot. thanks, joe
Balanced local, regional and national news, community events, quality music and both informational & entertaining programs. Although radio dial stays put on KPBX, I never tire of your outstanding programming.
Spokane Public Radio is my source for intelligent music and ideas. The richness and variety continually feeds my artistic and intellectual appetite. I began performing at age five for my kindergarten graduation with a small Strauss waltz. I've studied piano, voice, violin, percussion, baroque organ, trombone as well as dabbled with almost all of the orchestral instruments. I'm self taught on the accordion, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, mandolin and more. I've performed at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, The Houston Astro Dome, The Festival at Sandpoint (Five times), The Panida Theater countless times and warmed up dozens of name acts. I currently play in two jazz duos, a blues band, a gospel group and am on rotation for Sandpoint Sunday Service. I'm thrilled when I hear a familiar piece that I've once played, either orchestrally, from jazz, blues or from chorale groups. Not to mention all of the great "talk" programs such as Fresh Air. Thank you so much!
national news, local/regional news, and local and regional arts and entertainment events. Over the years KPBX has introduced us to many local, cultural events including book and movie reviews. We assume that if you review it, it's worth checking out. We also appreciate the locally produced music programs - Verne Windham, Brian Flick, and Leo Atkinson. They represent great knowledge and diverse musical interests. KPBX is alike a part of the family, always around, sometimes in the foreground, sometimes in the background, at the same time familiar, friendly, interesting, and challenging. Thanks.
news & information
I am a rural mail carrier and listen to KSFC on my route everyday I work. Maybe Dick remembers when I asked him if he works for NPR, by which, of course, I meant SPR. I love it for news, environmental, and political discourse. I learn, I laugh, and even cry. My favorite shows are Talk of the Nation, All Things Considered, AR, Living on Earth, To the Point, This American Life, and Wait Wait. I think you all do a fabulous job and feel very fortunate to live in an area that has such great public radio. My membership is money well spent, the best actually! Oh, and I think Verne is the bomb!!
All of it (Except sometimes I turn down the sopranos- they pierce my ears!)
Regional, national, and world news, and all day long listening. KPBX is the best public radio station on the planet. I like the variety of music played as well, although I am not an opera fan. I like the balance of music and talk. Some of my favorites - jazz on Fridays, blues with Brian Foster (wish it was on earlier - I'm a Montana listener), Harmonia, Vox Humana, Guitar Hour, BBC, Morning Edition, This American Life, Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, Fresh Air, and Marketplace. I listen by streaming over my computer, since the signal here in NW Montana is a little weak. We really get our money's worth with our membership.
I always look forward to Movies 101 on the weekends. What a great resource this is for movie reviews from local Spokane critics. The best part is many times they come up with 3 different opinions. SPR is my source for local film reviews.
...News, music and a feeling of being connected to home. I left Spokane to join the Peace Corps in Africa in 2006, but didn't have internet access here until January. After listening to KPBX almost every day since it began, I found that I truly missed it. Sometimes I had liked being unaware of the day to day of American politics but, for the most part, it is good to resume my old habits as an NPR fanatic. I can also "nag" from Africa to make sure my kids are reminded to take the grandchildren to the KPBX kids events.
I often have to start my day very early in the morning - like 3:30 or 4:30 AM., and am grateful for the BBC!
News, music, public affairs, humor, the latest recordings in many genres.......you name it and I listen. I especially enjoy KSFC and the variety of news, talk and public affairs. I also really appreciate all the events you do and wish I had time to go and enjoy them myself. I have radios all over my house...and depending on what's being broadcast often listen to both stations as I go from room to room. Spokane Public Radio is a cultural lifeline for me!
The programs on SPR provide me with learning and laughter- from the news I need daily, to big humor like Wait, Wait and This American Life. I feel informed on weekdays and entertained on weekends. All thanks to Spokane Public Radio.
...Classical Music. I love listening to Verne's show! He's so easy to listen to. He has a way of making the listeners feel right at home. I love the diversity his show provides. He's also serious, sincere, and smart without being stuffy. We are so fortunate to have this program (and our other classical music programs) in our area.
I love listening to On Point and Talk of the Nation on KSFC to hear callers feedback about the election situation.
